After reading through our blog a friend recommended Derek Siver’s book, Anything You Want and we’re glad he did. Published in June 2011, Siver’s first book is an inspirational call to follow your heart and chase your dreams. It is a transparent view into the story of Siver’s company CD Baby, considered to be the first internet platform to empower independent musicians.

A professional musician, Sivers taught himself how to program so he could sell his own music online, and accidentally started a business when friends asked if he would sell theirs too. Like many of the entrepreneurs we’ve featured, his company grew out of a desire to help his friends follow their dreams. CD Baby officially launched in 1998 and grew into a multi-million dollar business, and the largest seller of indie music on the web. Ten years later, in 2008, the company was sold to Disc Makers for $22 million dollars. Siver set up a charitable trust for music education and gave away the proceeds. This post where he talks about why he gave away his company is well worth your time.

The wisdom in Anything You Want speaks for itself, so we’ve decided to share a few of our favorite quotes from the book. The book is available here. Watch a few of Siver’s TED talks here.

Business is not about money. It’s about making dreams come true for others and for yourself.

No “yes.” Either “hell yeah” or “no.”

“Revolution” is a term that people use only when you’re successful. Before that, you’re just a quirky person who does things differently.

Start now. No funding needed.

Most people don’t know why they’re doing what they’re doing. They imitate others, go with the flow, and follow paths without making their own.

The real point of doing anything is to be happy, so do only what makes you happy.

Business is as creative as the fine arts. You can be as unconventional, unique, and quirky as you want. A business is a reflection of the creator.

In the end, it’s about what you want to be, not what you want to have.

When you sign up for a marathon, you don’t want a taxi to take you to the finish line.

Whatever you make, it’s your creation, so make it your personal dream come true.
